The Dahomean Lawyer Thrown Out of a Paris Club
On 3 August 1923, in Paris, American customers had a Dahomean lawyer thrown out of a nightclub: a French citizen, a doctor wounded in the war, who called himself a prince. A year later Kojo Tovalou Houénou had founded a newspaper with a plural name, Les Continents, and was speaking at Carnegie Hall before Marcus Garvey's crowds. To go home he had to disown Garvey; he died in a Dakar prison, and his widow, a Texas soprano, lies in an unmarked grave.
