The president in a cassock ousted by the street
On 17 July 1963, in a Brazzaville cemetery, Christian and Marxist trade unionists swore on their ancestors to free any one of them who was jailed. Facing them stood a priest suspended by his Church, Abbé Fulbert Youlou, Congo's first president, who never took off his cassock. On 13 August an unarmed crowd opened the central prison; on 15 August, three years to the day after independence, the abbé resigned.
