The Mali King Who Made Gold Fall in Cairo
In July 1324 a king from Mali camped three days at the foot of the pyramids, refused to kiss the ground before the sultan of Egypt and spread so much gold through Cairo that the price of the metal fell for twelve years. On the way home he lost his way in the desert and borrowed to get back. The Timbuktu chronicle judged him less generous than a later king; seven centuries on, a celebrity website made him the richest man in history.
