The trade unionist jailed at independence
On 10 May 1960, Abbé Youlou's government arrested twenty-four activists over an alleged communist plot. Among them was one woman, Alice Badiangana, a twenty-one-year-old union delegate, held apart from the men. When Congo became independent to the sound of nearly a hundred cannon shots, she was still in prison. Three years later she was in the street when the crowd brought the abbé down.
