On the evening of 21 August 1986, a market day in the Nyos valley, a crater lake in Cameroon suddenly released the gas stored in its depths. By morning the villages stood intact and almost no one in them was alive. Scientists spent thirty years defusing the lake; what set off the disaster, no one ever found out.
