The Ivorian Women Who Marched on a Prison
In December 1949, eight leaders of the PDCI had been held without trial for ten months in the Grand-Bassam prison and had stopped eating. Barred from taxis, hundreds of women walked the forty kilometres from Abidjan, and on a lagoon bridge they were met with fire hoses loaded with sand. The prison did not open, and that bridge is now called Victory Bridge.
