The Barefoot Prophet France Expelled
In 1913, a Liberian schoolmaster just out of prison set off on foot, in a white robe, with a Bible, a gourd and a cross-staff. In eighteen months, the Ivory Coast and the Gold Coast burned their fetishes and were baptised in their tens of thousands. France expelled him and burned the chapels; the villages rebuilt in stone and bought Bibles they could not read.
